From Absence to Access: Importance of Women's Health

Updated: Aug 11, 2024

There has been a growing movement to provide sanitary products in schools in recent years. Currently, 27 out of 50 US States have mandated hygienic products to school, but Tennessee is not one of them. This initiative addresses a critical yet often overlooked issue affecting millions of students worldwide.

Supplying sanitary products in schools is essential due to numerous reasons. Starting off, it promotes health and hygiene. Students are at risk of infections and other health complications without access to sanitary products. It is also commonly seen in many studies that period poverty leads to a lack of attendance in schools. Students who cannot afford sanitary products are more likely to miss school during their periods. Learning gaps get creating, lowering academic performance. Moreover, providing these products can help normalize menstruation and increase comfortability in a female's daily school life which creates a more supportive and inclusive school environment. This support can significantly improve students' self-esteem and overall mental health.

The implementation of providing sanitary products in schools involves several practical steps. Schools can start by assessing the needs of their students and ensuring a consistent supply of products. Dispensers or holders can be installed in bathrooms for easy access, and educators can be trained to provide support and information. Partnering with local organizations and businesses to fund can also help sustain these initiatives and raise awareness in the broader community.

The importance of supplying sanitary products at schools cannot be overstated. It is a vital step toward ensuring the health, education, and well-being of students. As we continue to advocate for this cause, let’s remember that access to sanitary products is not a luxury, it is a necessity.
